Helping Owls Thrive: Cappagh Browne Donates and Installs Owl Boxes in Westbere
Category: Environment, News

Introduction
The idea originated during a Westbere Parish Council meeting, where the potential benefits of installing owl boxes were discussed. Darren Padfield, CBUL’s Kent Civils Manager, took the lead by consulting with Environmental Advisor Tristen Parker. Together, they coordinated with the landowner, Mrs. Harlow, who was supportive from the outset. Padfield noted that the chosen site—a wildlife-rich area with suitable trees—was ideal for the owl boxes.
The installation was carried out by Elliott of Minters Tree Care, who brought his expertise in tree care to the project. Elliott, having collaborated with Darren on previous environmental initiatives, was keen to assist. He described the installation day as a “wonderful, just as expected” experience, highlighting the favourable weather and the suitability of the oak, sycamore, and beech trees selected for the boxes.
The placement of the boxes was strategic to cater to different owl species. Barn owls, for instance, prefer open farmland for foraging and require nesting sites that provide easy access. According to the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, barn owls thrive in mixed farming habitats with features like rough pastures and well-managed field margins. Therefore, one box was installed on the woodland perimeter facing open fields. For smaller species like tawny owls, which favour wooded areas, boxes were placed within the woodland.
Owls play a crucial role in natural pest control by preying on small mammals such as voles and mice, thus benefiting local agriculture and reducing the need for chemical pest management. The Barn Owl Trust emphasizes that rough grassland is optimal foraging habitat for barn owls, supporting a healthy prey population. By providing suitable nesting sites, initiatives like this contribute to maintaining the ecological balance.
This collaboration between CBUL, Westbere Parish Council, and Minters Tree Care exemplifies how community engagement and corporate responsibility can lead to meaningful environmental conservation efforts. By enhancing habitats for owls, they are not only supporting these majestic birds but also promoting a healthier ecosystem for the entire community.
